Does Hyaluronic Acid Help to Fight Signs of Aging? Here are 5 Scientifically Proven Serums That Actually Work (And You've Never Heard Of!)
By: Dr. Kelly, MD Dermatology
Is Hyaluronic Acid (HA) the secret to smooth skin as you age?
There’s no denying that hyaluronic acid is one of the most researched and scientifically proven ingredients to visibly reduce lines, sagging skin, and age spots.
In fact, multiple clinical studies have proven its ability to decrease the depth of your wrinkles by up to 40% in as soon as 8 weeks.
However, not all Hyaluronic Acid serums are created equal.
For example, should you use 3% or 5% Hyaluronic Acid? And what ingredient should it, or shouldn’t it be paired with?
After 30 years of watching my patients struggle with expensive trial and error, I knew there had to be a better way.
That's why, as a clinical dermatologist, I tested dozens of products to find what truly works against:
- Deep, noticeable wrinkles and fine lines
- Loose, sagging skin
- Dark spots
- Dry, sensitive, or oily skin
2 years later, I finally identified the top 5 absolute best hyaluronic acid serums for aging skin.
And here’s what’s surprising. Some of them are brands you’ve probably never heard of.
But, don't be mistaken. That’s only because instead of spending millions on marketing, celebrity endorsers, and fancy packaging — these labs pour everything into research and quality ingredients.
So if you want to wake up with skin that’s smooth, plump, and looks up to 10 years younger — keep reading to discover these 5 “hidden gems” that can actually make a difference on your skin at age 50, 60, and 70.
#1 Inblair’s Rejuvenate Face Serum
“Doc, have you done something different?”
My patient asked after not seeing each other for months.
“Because your skin is looking great, no dark spots!” But honestly, the spots were still there. They had just visibly faded after a few weeks of using Rejuvenate Face Serum.
When she pointed out how my dark spots seemingly disappeared, I remembered the first time I tried this serum. I was skeptical and didn’t believe it could make any difference.
But fast forward 6 months later, and I absolutely love the texture of my skin. It’s soft like a baby. The lines on my forehead are less noticeable. And my marionette lines are smoother and plumped out too.
I liked it so much, that I started recommending Rejuvenate Face Serum to all my patients with mature skin.
And their results were also remarkable.
For example, I had a patient who was around her 60s. She had crow’s feet, and a bit of sagging on her jaw that was making her self-conscious. But after she tried Rejuvenate Face Serum, she was stunned.
Not only did it soften the wrinkles around her eyes, but her jaw also became firmer. She said she felt more confident and less reliant on makeup, which never happened before with other serums.
Because of this, Rejuvenate is the #1 hyaluronic acid serum I’d recommend to anyone with mature skin.
Wondering what makes it so effective against wrinkles and sagging?
First, it contains very clean, high-quality ingredients. It has no cheap fillers or harsh synthetic ingredients that could irritate your skin.
But what really makes it special is its unique ‘multi-weight formula’.
Serums with ordinary formulas often contain 1-size molecules that are too big to penetrate the skin. So they just get stuck on the surface.
But, Rejuvenate’s ‘multi-weight formula’ uses hyaluronic acid molecules of different weights/sizes. It can reach every layer of your skin, down to the deepest one.
The larger molecules work on the surface, instantly smoothing those fine lines and giving you that youthful glow.
Meanwhile, the smaller molecules penetrate deeper, like water soaking into dry soil, to plump up wrinkles from the inside out.
This combination, along with other botanical ingredients like tremella mushroom, purslane, and aloe vera makes this hyaluronic acid serum one of the most effective for fighting aging, reducing wrinkles, and eliminating fine lines.
Now, you'll be amazed by what these natural ingredients can do together to maximize the anti-aging effect of hyaluronic acid.
Tremella holds 500 times its weight in water, keeping your skin soft and elastic. Purslane acts like a shield against sun damage and pollution, the #1 cause of accelerated aging.
And, aloe vera contains vitamins that soothe and nourish your skin — making Rejuvenate perfect even for the most sensitive skin, as it’s all-natural. I have sensitive skin that’s prone to cystic zits, but Rejuvenate was gentle and didn’t break me out at all.
As a bonus, Rejuvenate is super easy to use. It’s lightweight, absorbs quickly, and doesn’t feel greasy or sticky – making it perfect under moisturizer or makeup.
Therefore, among the serums that I’ve listed, I found Rejuvenate the best for mature skin.
It’s a favorite among my patients in their 50s, 60s, and 70s for its ability to smooth out wrinkles, by targeting the deepest layer of your skin.
So if your main concern is looking visibly younger – then you should give Rejuvenate a try.
#2 Strivectin Hydration Multiplier
#2 Strivectin Hydration Multiplier
Strivectin’s Hydration Multiplier Hyaluronic Acid Serum is a great product inspired by K-Beauty’s “skin flooding method” – which is a layering technique that uses a humectant Hyaluronic Acid to add moisture, and an emollient-like Ceramides to protect your skin’s barrier.
If you’re not familiar with these terms, a humectant is a substance that keeps things moist. Meanwhile, an emollient is an ingredient that forms a film on your skin to soothe dryness. In short, it’s quite hydrating, so it can be a good product to try if your skin is on the drier side.
When I first tried it, I was surprised about the dual pump. It had 2 different products that you mix and apply on your skin, which was interesting. I also like the creamy texture of the serum.
It does contain some fragrance, so if you’re prone to dryness and irritation, this may not be suitable. I have sensitive skin, but I didn’t feel any sting or “minty” sensation on my face when I applied it, so it's worth patch testing to see how your skin reacts.
Like Rejuvenate, I felt a bit of firming on my skin on the first try. I also love how my face feels soft and moisturized. After a few weeks, the fine lines on my forehead had become less noticeable, too.
This serum boasts an impressive blend of active ingredients, including Hyaluronic Acid and Polyglutamic Acid for skin hydration. While its ceramides help against moisture loss by strengthening the skin’s barrier.
I’m actually a fan of ceramides which is third on their ingredient list, as it’s been proven to help with redness, itching, and flaking.
While Strivectin Hydration Multiplier offers amazing results, it falls short of the top spot compared to Inblair’s Rejuvenate, which offers 4 of the most effective anti-aging ingredients like Multi-weight HA, Tremella, Purslane, and Aloe Vera that are both natural and gentle on mature skin.
Nevertheless, Strivectin Hydration Multiplier remains a powerful option, especially for those seeking a solution for their dry skin.
#3 Cocokind Vitamin C Glow Serum
#3 Cocokind Vitamin C Glow Serum
In comparison with the first two serums that are more focused on hydration and moisturization, Cocokind Vitamin C Glow Serum is formulated to brighten your skin. So if your main concern is uneven skin tone, this might be the product for you.
I found the serum a little sticky even after patting it in. So I recommend waiting a few minutes before applying moisturizer and sunblock. Otherwise, it might cause some pilling. But it’s definitely perfect for no make-up days and evening use.
After a few days of using this serum, I noticed that my skin was less dull and tired-looking – exactly what you'd expect from Cocokind Vitamin C Glow Serum's primary ingredient, ascorbyl glucoside. This stable form of Vitamin C is designed to help brighten uneven skin tone.
Meanwhile, its second ingredient is sodium hyaluronate powder, which is the salt form of hyaluronic acid. It hydrates your skin and defends it against environmental stressors.
After a month of using the serum, I also noticed that my cheeks had a slightly better skin texture. This was because of the azelaic acid and sea grape caviar extract they included in their formula.
However, I did feel a mild tingle on my skin, perhaps because it contains citric acid. Or I might have just mixed it poorly with other products I’ve used. For this, I recommend anyone with sensitive skin to do a patch test first.
While it doesn’t quite reach the top spots compared to Inblair’s Rejuvenate, or Strivectin Hydration Multiplier, Cocokind Vitamin C Glow Serum delivers a brighter, glowy complexion that we expect from a Hyaluronic Acid serum.
#4 COSRX The Hyaluronic Acid 3
#4 COSRX The Hyaluronic Acid 3
For those seeking a budget-friendly option without sacrificing quality. COSRX The Hyaluronic Acid 3 Serum is an excellent choice. This is a brand many of my younger patients love because of its ability to lock in moisture and hydrate your skin.
This serum uses a 3% pure Hyaluronic Acid and Ceramides to hydrate and protect your skin from external stressors. It also has NMF or Amino Acid Complex to improve your skin barrier – protecting you against dryness and dehydration.
When it first arrived, I was a bit concerned about the packaging. The dropper was a little short and the bottle was black. So although it was pretty, I had no way of knowing how much product was left.
But when I tried it, I liked how the serum easily glided on my skin. When I layered it with a light moisturizer and sunblock, there was no pilling.
The main benefits of this serum are the hydration and barrier protection it promises to deliver, so if you’re prone to dry, itchy skin, this could be the product for you. The ingredient list is also simple and free from sulfates and phthalates that could irritate your skin.
However, it does contain the silicon-based polymer, dimethicone, which can be a dealbreaker for those who prefer more natural and environmentally-friendly products.
Although it isn’t as effective as other serums listed, The COSRX The Hyaluronic Acid 3 is a solid option for those looking to incorporate Hyaluronic Acid into their routine without breaking the bank.
#5 Naturium Quadruple Hyaluronic Acid Serum 5%
#5 Naturium Quadruple Hyaluronic Acid Serum 5%
Naturium Quadruple Hyaluronic Acid Serum 5% focuses on replenishing moisture and hydrating your skin – so you can have a plump and supple complexion.
Formulated with 5% Hyaluronic Acid, this serum is designed to restore your skin barrier and provide your skin with maximum hydration.
It has a gel-like texture that absorbs quickly into my skin, leaving it soft. But because of the consistency, it’s somewhere between a serum and a gel. I like that it allows me to put on a foundation without it looking caked on. So, it’s a great serum under other products and makeup.
Of note, this serum does not contain other botanical ingredients to support its hyaluronic acid formula. But I love how its 5% Hyaluronic Acid was formulated to be paraben-free, gluten-free, and fragrance-free, which helps make it suitable for all skin types.
Naturium is a brand that prides itself on clean, cruelty-free formulations, and its Quadruple Hyaluronic Acid Serum 5% is no exception. With its focus on skin hydration, it was a great addition to both my morning and evening skincare routine.
While I like using this product, I do feel there are better options out there. That’s why Naturium Hyaluronic Acid Serum 5% ranks after the others.
