Does Hyaluronic Acid Help Fight Signs of Aging? Here are 5 Scientifically-Proven Serums That Actually Work For Mature Skin
By: Dr. Kelly, MD Dermatology
May 28, 2024 (updated)
Is hyaluronic acid the secret to mature skin that looks 5 to 10 years younger?Ā
Thereās no denying that hyaluronic acid is one of the most researched and scientifically proven ingredients to visibly reduce lines, sagging skin, and age spots after 50.
In fact, multiple clinical studies have proven its ability to decrease the depth of your wrinkles by up to 40% in as soon as 8 weeks. Thatās almost half your wrinklesā¦gone.
However, not all Hyaluronic Acid serums are created equal.
For example, should you use 3% or 5% Hyaluronic Acid? And what ingredient should it, or shouldnāt it be paired with?Ā
So as a clinical dermatologist, I tested dozens of different Hyaluronic Acid serums to find the answers and help my patients effectively target:
- Deep, noticeable wrinkles and fine lines
- Loose, sagging skinĀ
- Dark spots
- And dry, sensitive, or oily skin
After 2 years, I finally identified the top 5 absolute best Hyaluronic Acid serums for mature skin.
So if youāre ready look up to 10 years younger because of your smooth, radiant skin. Keep reading.Ā
Iāll be revealing the 5 best hyaluronic acid serums that can really make a difference on your skin at ages 50, 60, and beyond.
#1 Inblairās Rejuvenate Face Serum
āHave you done anything different?ā
My patient asked me after not seeing each other for months.Ā
āBecause your skin is looking great, no dark spots!āĀ But honestly, the spots were still there. They had just visibly faded after a few weeks of using Rejuvenate.
When she pointed out how my dark spots seemingly disappeared, I remembered the first time I tried this serum. I was skeptical and didnāt believe it could make any difference.Ā
But fast forward 6 months later, and I absolutely love the texture of my skin. Itās soft like a baby. The lines on my forehead arenāt gone, but theyāre less noticeable. And my marionette lines are smoother and plumped out too.
I liked it so much, that I recommended Rejuvenate to my patients with mature skin.Ā
And their results were also remarkable.Ā Ā
For example, I had a patient who was around her 60s. She had crowās feet, and a bit of sagging on her jaw that was making her self-conscious. But after she tried Rejuvenate, she was stunned.
Not only did it soften the wrinkles around her eyes, but her jaw also became firmer. She said she felt more confident and less reliant on makeup, which had never happened before with other serums.
Because of this, Rejuvenate is the #1 hyaluronic acid serum Iād recommend to anyone with mature skin.
Wondering what makes it so effective against wrinkles and sagging?Ā
First, it contains very clean, high-quality ingredients. It has no cheap fillers or harsh synthetic ingredients that could irritate your skin.Ā
But what really makes it special is its unique āmulti-weight formulaā.
Serums with ordinary formulas often contain 1-size molecules that are too big to penetrate the skin. So they just get stuck on the surface.Ā
But, Rejuvenateās āmulti-weight formulaā uses hyaluronic acid molecules of different weights/sizes. It can reach every layer of your skin, down to the deepest one.Ā
The larger molecules work on the surface, instantly smoothing those fine lines and giving you that youthful glow.
Meanwhile, the smaller molecules penetrate deeper, like water soaking into dry soil, to smooth out wrinkles from the inside out.Ā
This combination, along with other botanical ingredients like tremella mushroom, purslane, and aloe vera makes this hyaluronic acid serum one of the most effective for fighting aging, reducing wrinkles, and eliminating fine lines.
You'll be amazed by what these natural ingredients can do together.Ā
Tremella holds 500 times its weight in water, keeping your skin soft and elastic.Ā
Purslane acts like a shield against sun damage and pollution, the #1 cause of accelerated aging.Ā
And, aloe vera contains vitamins that soothe and nourish your skin ā making Rejuvenate perfect even for the most sensitive skin, as itās all-natural. I have sensitive skin thatās prone to cystic zits, but Rejuvenate was gentle and didnāt break me out at all.Ā
As a bonus, Rejuvenate is super easy to use. Itās lightweight, absorbs quickly, and doesnāt feel greasy or sticky ā making it perfect under moisturizer or makeup.
Therefore, among the serums that Iāve listed, I found Rejuvenate the best for mature skin.Ā
Itās a favorite among my patients in their 50s, 60s, and 70s for its ability to smooth out wrinkles, by targeting the deepest layer of your skin.
So if your main concern is looking visibly younger ā then you should give Rejuvenate a try.
#2 LāOreal Revitalift Derm Intensives - 1.5% Pure Hyaluronic Acid Serum
LāOreal Revitalift Derm Intensives is a highly acclaimed and well-loved product. And so far, Iām impressed with its performance. With its 1.5% pure hyaluronic acid formula, itās formulated to hydrate skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Similar to Inblairās Rejuvenate, this serum LāOreal Revitalift Derm Intensives combines large and small molecules of hyaluronic acid to hydrate both the surface and the deeper layers of the skin.Ā
This multi-weight formula helps lock in moisture on the surface while plumping the skin from the deepest layers. No wonder it absorbs quickly and gives an instant, visible glowing effect.Ā Ā
I felt that LāOreal Revitalift Derm Intensives had a lightweight and non-greasy formula. Because of this, it layers smoothly under sunblock and makeup.Ā Ā
I also appreciated that itās fragrance-free and paraben-free, which makes it gentle and non-irritating for most skin types. Iām slightly prone to blemishes, but LāOreal Revitalift Derm Intensives didnāt break me out the way other serums can.
My skin did peel a little after 1 week of use, and when I washed my face in the morning, it left a refreshing pink look. This could be because of the exfoliating ingredient called HEPES. HEPES encourages gentle exfoliation and helps shed dead skin cells. This removes old, dull skin, revealing a fresher and smoother complexion.Ā Ā
While LāOreal Revitalift Derm Intensives delivers remarkable results, it falls just short of the top spot when compared to Inblairās Rejuvenate Face Serum, which offers an exceptional non-irritating formulation along with the powerful combination of naturally derived Tremella Fuciformis Extract and Portulaca Oleracea Extract.Ā
Nevertheless,Ā LāOreal Revitalift Derm Intensives serum remains a strong option for those seeking effective and luxurious anti-aging skincare.
#3 La Roche-Posayās Hyalu B5 Pure Hyaluronic Acid Serum
La Roche-Posay Hyalu B5 serum uses pure, concentrated hyaluronic acid to leave your skin feeling plumped up. It also aims to replenish the skinās natural moisture barrier.
Along with the hyaluronic acid, this formula contains glycerin, and Vitamin B5 to help maintain the skinās moisture. Its Madecassoside (derived from the Centella Asiatica plant) nourishes the skin, while its prebiotic thermal water protects skin cells from free radicals.Ā Ā
When I first tried this serum, I noticed a rich serum texture that left my skin feeling soft and supple. Itās lightweight and doesnāt feel sticky on my skin. Which makes it great under makeup, and for daytime use.
It has a scent though, which might be a downside to those who prefer fragrance-free, non-irritating products. However, the scent felt fine to me, as itās subtle. Iāve also read that their product has been allergy-tested, so even if it has fragrance, it can still be suitable for sensitive skin.
I also appreciated that itās non-comedogenic, which just means it doesnāt clog the pores. I have an acne-prone forehead and nose, and Iām happy that it didnāt break me out. Which means, it may be suitable for acne-prone skin.Ā
The main benefit of this serum is the hydration and barrier protection that it aims to deliver, so if you have dry, itchy, or sensitive skin, this could be the product for you. The ingredient list is oil-free, paraben-free, and suitable for sensitive eyes.Ā However, it does contain the silicon-based polymer, dimethicone. So it might be a deal breaker for some who prefer more natural and environmentally-friendly products.
While they donāt explicitly state that their hyaluronic acid is also multi-weighted, the Hyalu B5 serum is still a solid option for those looking for quick hydration and stronger skin barrier ā which are both very important when dealing with mature skin.
#4Ā Ceraveās Hydrating Hyaluronic Acid Serum
For those seeking a budget-friendly option without sacrificing quality, Ceraveās Hydrating Hyaluronic Acid Serum is an excellent choice. Cerave believes healthy skin starts with a strong protective barrier. When this barrier breaks down, you get problems like acne, eczema, and dry patches.Ā
This is why their Hydrating Hyaluronic Acid Serum is formulated to do two jobs: Lock in moisture and rebuild your skin's protective barrier.
On top of hyaluronic acid, this serum contains a couple of impressive active ingredients like Vitamin B5 that help soothe and repair mild skin irritations.Ā Ā
Vitamin B5 works together with 3 essential ceramides to lock in skin moisture and help restore your skinās protective barrier. This is particularly important for people with mature skin, as weāre more susceptible to dryness and irritation caused by a compromised skin barrier.
I felt that this serum has a texture that is between a gel and a cream, and for this reason, this is suitable for those with normal to dry skin. However, because of this creamy texture, it may not be as comfortable for those with oily skin. I have an oily forehead and it does make it look a bit shiny. Fortunately, itās easy to blot away the excess shine with tissue.
I have sensitive skin, so I love that Ceraveās Hydrating Hyaluronic Acid Serum is not only fragrance-free. Itās also paraben-free and wonāt clog pores, making it suitable for acne-prone skin. However, it also contains dimethicone like La Roche Posayās Hyalu B5, which again, might discourage those who prefer organic and sustainable products.
While it doesnāt quite reach the top spots compared to Inblairās Rejuvenate Face Serum and LāOreal Revitalift Derm Intensives - 1.5% Pure Hyaluronic Acid Serum, Ceraveās Hydrating Hyaluronic Acid Serum is a solid option for those looking to incorporate hyaluronic acid without breaking the bank.
#5 Kiehlās Vital Skin-Strengthening Hyaluronic Acid Super Serum
Kiehlās Vital Skin-Strengthening Hyaluronic Acid Super Serum focuses on āstrengthening the skinā to help it resist signs of aging ā like dullness and fine lines.
While not multi-weighted, this serum is formulated with hyaluronic acid with a small molecular size so the skin can absorb it better. It also contains an adaptogenic herbal complex, which is a blend of adaptogens including red ginseng root, holy basil, and Schisandra berry.Ā
These adaptogens work together to defend your skin from stressors, renew the skin, and give it a radiant appearance.Ā
I personally found it very hydrating. It makes my skin feel fresh and moist. And itās not greasy at all, making it perfect for layering with other products.Ā
Itās formulated to be free of parabens, so you donāt need to worry about it interfering with hormonal balance in the body. However, it does contain some alcohol and fragrances such as limonene that could irritate the skin. I have sensitive skin and it felt fine for me, so please do a patch test first to see how your skin tolerates it.Ā
Kiehlās is a brand that prides itself on gentle, yet effective skincare formulas for the past 170+ years, and its Vital Skin-Strengthening Hyaluronic Acid Super Serum is no exception. Its focus on hydration and skin health makes it an excellent addition to any anti-aging skincare routine.Ā
While I like using this product, it is a bit on the high end despite only containing small sizes of hyaluronic acid molecules. Thatās why itās 5th on my list.
